The Process Instruments Group is excited to have reached the Lancashire Business View Red Rose Awards 2019 finals.

Pi has been shortlisted for two awards at the Red Rose Awards, where businesses throughout Lancashire are celebrated.

  • Growing Business Award
Pi’s growth of 53% in 2018 comes on top of 19.4% in 2017 and 29% in 2016. On a longer timeframe, Pi has shown 1050% growth in 10 years and an average growth of >26% per year over the last 10 years which has resulted from investment in all aspects of the business and specifically our new analysers.
  • International Achievement Award
In 2018, Pi grew its export sales by 34%. Pi doesn’t have an ‘export’ department. Exporting is so integral to everything we do that Pi just has ‘customers’. Some of our customers are in the UK, (approximately 30%), but most are outside the UK.

Pi is looking forward to attending the awards, held at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, on Thursday, March 14th, and would like to take this opportunity to wish our fellow finalists good luck!

Pi’s Board of Directors with a 20th Anniversary Gift from Chemtrac

As well as the recent 20th Anniversary Party, Pi are celebrating 20 years of working with US company, Chemtrac Inc..

The partnership between Pi and Chemtrac has been fundamental to Pi’s success. Chemtrac is, and has been, a customer, distributor, OEM, supplier and supporter since Pi’s launch in 1998.

Chemtrac was founded in 1985 and is based in Atlanta, Georgia. The company was launched with the introduction of a new streaming current monitor, allowing people to measure coagulation processes in real time, known to Pi’s customers as ‘StreamerSense’. Chemtrac has since grown to include particle counters (ParticleSense), laboratory charge analysers (LabSense) as well as other sensors supplied by Pi.

Vice President and General Manager at Chemtrac, John Clark said: “It’s more than just a business relationship – it’s a trusted partnership. We collaborate with Pi to create better products, better systems and better solutions for our customers. We are in communication with Pi daily, and we try to get together at least a couple of times a year. We share new ideas, technical expertise and practical experiences.”

Jim Evans, Technical Director, flew to the UK to attend Pi’s 20th Anniversary party on behalf of Chemtrac. He said: “It was an honour to represent Chemtrac at the 20th Anniversary celebration. While the event was a black-tie affair, it was not at all stuffy as many formal functions can be. In contrast to the formal attire, the gathering seemed rather casual. I think that this is due to the unique family atmosphere that Pi has created among their employees and in their workplace.”

Water 4.0 and Industry 4.0 CRIUS Controller
Water 4.0 and Industry 4.0 CRIUS® Controller from Pi

Pi’s CRIUS® Controller is perfectly set up for Industry 4.0, Water 4.0 and the Internet of Things, as well as being fully SMART and DIGITAL, but what does this mean?

Industry 4.0 relates to the concept that we are living through a 4th Industrial Revolution where factories will be as SMART as they can be. The main principles are based on:

  • Interoperability
  • Information Transparency
  • Technical Assistance
  • Decentralisation

Water 4.0 is how this technology and philosophy will be implemented/will affect the water industry. The Internet of Things refers to all devices we use all the time talking to each other and making their own decisions.

It is generally accepted that SMART refers to the increasing sophistication of equipment to make decentralised decisions, so it is the technology that allows for the implementation of Industry 4.0 or Water 4.0, and DIGITAL refers to its comms capability. For example, in 1990 a chlorine analyser measured chlorine in water, gave out a 4-20mA output proportional to the chlorine and a couple of relays.

In 2018 the CRIUS® HaloSense (fully Water 4.0 developed) can provide the 4-20mA output and relays, but also has multiple digital comms options (interoperability), has space for up to 16 sensors (information transparency), has wireless and wired internet access (technical assistance) and full PID capability with remote setpoint, i.e. another device can set the setpoint (decentralisation). Watch a 2-minute animated video on Pi’s CRIUS® Controller below.

Free Chlorine Sensor from Pi
Free Chlorine Sensor from Pi

Pi’s HaloSense free chlorine sensor has recently been redesigned with two improvements, a new electrolyte and a new membrane design, resulting in an increased calibration interval of 6 months.

The introduction of a new electrolyte means longer maintenance intervals, going from 3 to 6 months to only once a year, reducing maintenance efforts whilst keeping the market leading accuracy and reliability the free chlorine sensor has always had.

Along with the electrolyte, a new membrane cap has been designed that makes the membrane easier to change and the maintenance process quicker. Pi’s previous free chlorine sensor had a two-part membrane cap comprising of an internal G-holder, which covered the sensor electrode, and an outer membrane cap. The new membrane cap does not use the G-holder so there is now only one part to change. To see how easy it is to maintain a HaloSense free chlorine sensor, please click here.

All industries using chlorine sensors – including municipal water, swimming pools/spas, industrial water treatment companies – want to reduce maintenance and calibration times. These two improvements, plus Pi’s CRIUS® or CRONOS® analyser which guides users through the calibration process, makes life easier for anyone maintaining the sensors.

Pi's new sales team additions
Pi’s new sales team additions: Karen Thirlwell, Wesley Ashworth and Oliver Riding

After a year of growth and success, the Process Instruments sales team has recruited three new members, Wesley Ashworth, Karen Thirlwell and Oliver Riding in order to continue to provide excellent service and back up to its growing number of customers worldwide.

Wesley has worked for Pi for six years developing his skills in several roles within the company. Joining Pi in 2011 as a manufacturing apprentice Wesley learnt how to build, test and maintain the equipment which led to him making occasional site visits to learn how the units worked in the field as well as helping to install the systems.

After Wesley finished his apprenticeship, he was able to transition into the role of Service Engineer, speaking with customers directly and travelling around the world to perform maintenance on the products. This led to Wesley being offered the role of Applications Engineer, travelling around the world to train customers in using the equipment. Wesley has now taken the step to join the international sales team, overseeing sales in South and Central America.

Karen, who has recently joined Pi, brings a wealth of eight years’ experience in technical sales. Karen will be managing all sales from Europe, Africa and the Middle East and will be the first point of contact for customers and distributors. Karen also brings with her a background as a Mechanical Engineer, which has helped her to adapt quickly to her new role within Pi’s sales team.

Oliver previously worked for Pi from 2014 to 2016 as a Graduate Development Chemist and was heavily involved in the early interference testing for both the OzoSense and DioSense Non-Membraned sensors developing a strong understanding of Pi’s products and how they operate.

Oliver has spent the last two years working in Technical Sales for an instrumentation and software company in Sheffield, before returning to Pi with the added expertise that he has developed. Oliver will be overseeing sales to the East of England and is aiming to schedule appointments to visit as many of his customers as possible.

Managing Director, Mike Riding said, “As our customer base grows, the addition of Wesley, Karen and Oliver to the sales team allows us to continually provide the excellent customer service and support that Pi has become known for.”

Dr. Rob Paramore is managing sales in North America, China and Singapore with Julius Guth managing sales in the rest of Asia, Australia and New Zealand with Tim Harte heading up Process Instruments (IRL) Ltd.

In the rest of the UK, Harry Threlfall oversees sales to the West of England and Wales, with Bill Sykes in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Pi continues to expand as we head into 2018. For more information about Pi, please visit our website, or feel free to give us a call.
