Following on from the success of numerous water treatment plants in the UK and Ireland, Pi is now beginning to offer the CoagSense coagulation controller to other countries in the world in an effort to help water treatment plants become more efficient and effective.

Termozipa Power Station, near Bogota, Colombia, has recently built a new water treatment works to provide clean water to the plant’s cooling towers from the neighbouring river water. Coagulation dosing at the water treatment works will be automatically controlled by Pi’s CoagSense coagulation controller to ensure that the water is treated effectively, helping to improve water quality and optimise chemical usage.

Pi’s Julius Guth commissions coagulation controller in Colombia

Salt Cathedral, ColombiaSalt Cathedral, Colombia

Pi’s head office contact for Latin America, Julius Guth, recently travelled to Colombia and Mexico to visit distributors and assist with the commissioning of Pi’s first coagulation controller on the continent.

Designed to assist with the monitoring and control of coagulation dosing, Pi’s CoagSense coagulation controller can take in signals from several sensors and in this instance is using:

The installation of Pi equipment for such applications is made possible by Pi’s sophisticated Remote Access system which enables 2-way communication with onsite analysers, allowing settings to be adjusted remotely from anywhere in the world.

Julius also spent time with Pi’s distributors in Colombia and Mexico, learning more about their latest projects and visiting water treatment companies. The trip wasn’t all work though! Julius had the opportunity to visit the underground Salt Cathedral in Zipaquirá, known as the ‘First Wonder of Colombia’. This spectacular cathedral is made up of tunnels and expansive caverns carved into the mountainside. Consisting almost entirely of rock salt, the mountain still has an active salt mine alongside the stunning cathedral.

Pi’s head office contact for Portugal and Spain, Daniel Nearney, travelled to Portugal to attend the event and meet with companies who have shown interest in Pi’s products. Izasa’s exhibition stand showcased products that are currently receiving a lot of interest in the Portuguese market, including:

Daniel spent time with Izasa representatives Joáo Paulo (Portugal) and David Aparicio (Spain) at their exhibition stand and was able to assist them with technical advice and product specific knowledge. Daniel also took the opportunity to catch up with representatives from EPAL (Free Public Water Company of Lisbon), who recently purchased several HaloSense systems for installation in their water treatment plants.
When commenting about his trip, Daniel said:

“It was a fantastic opportunity to attend ENEG and meet with customers and prospects based in Portugal. We have been long-standing partners with Izasa, so it’s always good to see them and provide assistance where we can. There looks to be many upcoming projects in 2020 and I look forward to working with Joáo and David to implement these in Portugal and Spain.”

ENEG is a biannual conference for water distribution and drainage companies from all over Portugal. It is the largest event of its kind in the country, and ENEG 2019 was the largest conference in ENEG history.

Julius Pi and Craig AllPronix at Anfield
Julius Guth from Pi (left) and Craig Bradshaw from AllPronix at Anfield

In February 2019, Pi welcomed Craig Bradshaw from AllPronix for a week of advanced product training at the head office in Burnley, UK. Craig is the product specialist for Pi equipment at AllPronix and is responsible for sales across South Africa.

The training week was very hands-on, providing Craig with practical experience in setting up the analysers and trying out different features. The training involved in-depth tutorials about the CRONOS® and CRIUS® analysers including communications, PID settings and remote access as well as sensor calibration procedures for the pHSense pH meter, ConductiSense conductivity meter, TurbSense® turbidity meter, SoliSense® suspended solids monitor and more.

Pi’s head office contact for South Africa, Julius Guth, spent the week training Craig with assistance from Wesley Ashworth and Ben Turner from Pi’s Technical Support team. But the week wasn’t all work; Craig also had plenty of fun trying his hand at Clay Pigeon Shooting at The Coniston Hotel and fulfilling his boyhood dream of watching Liverpool Football Club play at Anfield.

Julius said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Craig to our office and we had a great time together. Craig learnt a lot from the training, which will be invaluable when he is working with his customers back in South Africa. We have been partners with AllPronix for over 4 years now, so it’s always good to have a visit from them and provide assistance wherever we can.”

Pi’s Board of Directors with a 20th Anniversary Gift from Chemtrac
Pi’s Board of Directors with a 20th Anniversary Gift from Chemtrac

As well as the recent 20th Anniversary Party, Pi are celebrating 20 years of working with US company, Chemtrac Inc..

The partnership between Pi and Chemtrac has been fundamental to Pi’s success. Chemtrac is, and has been, a customer, distributor, OEM, supplier and supporter since Pi’s launch in 1998.

Chemtrac was founded in 1985 and is based in Atlanta, Georgia. The company was launched with the introduction of a new streaming current monitor, allowing people to measure coagulation processes in real time, known to Pi’s customers as ‘StreamerSense’. Chemtrac has since grown to include particle counters (ParticleSense), laboratory charge analysers (LabSense) as well as other sensors supplied by Pi.

Vice President and General Manager at Chemtrac, John Clark said: “It’s more than just a business relationship – it’s a trusted partnership. We collaborate with Pi to create better products, better systems and better solutions for our customers. We are in communication with Pi daily, and we try to get together at least a couple of times a year. We share new ideas, technical expertise and practical experiences.”

Jim Evans, Technical Director, flew to the UK to attend Pi’s 20th Anniversary party on behalf of Chemtrac. He said: “It was an honour to represent Chemtrac at the 20th Anniversary celebration. While the event was a black-tie affair, it was not at all stuffy as many formal functions can be. In contrast to the formal attire, the gathering seemed rather casual. I think that this is due to the unique family atmosphere that Pi has created among their employees and in their workplace.”
